Spitfire relic from the Battle of Britain, October 1940

This is an engine part from Spitfire work number R6779.

On the morning of the 8th October 1940, Pilot Officer George Henry Corbett, a Canadian in No. 66 Squadron, took off in Spitfire R6779 as Blue 2 with Bobby Oxspring and Pilot Officer Cooke.  He was shot down on Bayfors Marshes and killed.  He was 21 years old and is buried at Upchurch (St. Mary) Churchyard.
